Know Before You Vote: Gwinnett Transit Referendum
In Gwinnett County there is an important vote coming up on March 19th. We encourage all of you to educate yourselves about the referendum and then go vote!
On March 19th a special election will be held in Gwinnett presenting an important referendum to voters that would allow for significant expansion of transit services.
The referendum will put in place a 1% sales tax that will allow Gwinnett to contract with MARTA to help implement a comprehensive countywide transit plan that will help address traffic woes in Gwinnett.
This effort will help to reduce traffic, improve mobility, expand accessibility, create jobs, recruit a strong workforce, reduce carbon footprint, and prepare for the future.
The plan will double local bus and express routes, increase park & ride locations, offer flex on-demand services, expand paratransit options, and bring online bus rapid transit, direct connect and heavy rail services.
The 30-year transit plan proposed was crafted with significant input from Gwinnett citizens. By 2040 Gwinnett is projected to be the most populated county in Georgia with an estimated 600,000 more residents. In that same period another 500,000 jobs are anticipated to be created. With the growth and changes in Gwinnett, more travel options are needed.
This new referendum is significantly different than those of the past. This one offers Gwinnett complete control and oversight of the funds collected. Gwinnett determines where the money is spent, project priorities and service standards. Gwinnett will also have seats on the MARTA and ATL regional boards, allowing the county to input into how Gwinnett will fit into a much larger regional transit plan.
We encourage you to educate yourselves about this important issue and get out and vote. Election Day is March 19th. Early voting started February 25th.
