A Legacy of Giving
Giving is not just about the present, it’s also about the future. We believe, along with many of our fundholders, that giving can impact generations beyond ours. As we guide our fundholders on their journey of generosity, we wanted a way to honor those who desire to leave a legacy of giving. That’s why we created our Legacy Society and announced our founding members at this year’s Good2Give Celebration. Two of those founding members are Dick and Deb LoPresti.
In 2007, LoPresti’s became fundholders at the Community Foundation. One of their main goals with their donor-advised fund was modeling behaviour they hoped their now-adult children would follow.
“We have three wonderful daughters – Melissa, Anna and Hope- and we know that they care about important causes in their own community. Our hope is that they will use their own funds as well as the funds we leave to make an impact and improve the quality of life for others in our community,” said Dick LoPresiti.
Shortly after becoming fundholders, Dick and Deb updated their will and estate documents.
“It seemed only natural to include the Community Foundation in our will at that time,” Dick said. “The Community Foundation is uniquely positioned to serve in this role of managing our legacy gift. The staff is knowledgeable of the needs in our community. They can advise our daughters on these needs in the future. And the funds can be disbursed for many years after we are gone.
As the LoPresti’s thought about the directions they wanted their giving to take, along the way they discovered how valuable the Community Foundation is.
“We were supporting a short list of nonprofits in the community before engaging with the Community Foundation,” Dick said. “But once we became more involved with the knowledgeable staff at the Community Foundation, we learned of so many other organizations that we had not known before. Our understanding of the needs in the community was expanded and we learned of many dedicated people who devote their lives to addressing these needs. We can’t say enough about how the Community Foundation has helped us along our own journey of philanthropy.”
